Obesity is a problem that is effecting 32.9% of
Americans age 20-74 in the United States and almost 29% of Missourians are
obese. Being overweight leads to many health complications such as heart
disease, diabetes, osteoarthritis, decreased energy and risk of depression.
There are many factors that may contribute to obesity such as genetics, poor
eating habits and low levels of physical activity. It is recommended that
the average person get at least 30 minutes of vigorous physical activity per
day that increases heart rate. Such activity would include bike riding,
walking/jogging, jumping rope and playing outdoor sports. The Van Buren
Youth and Community Center offers a fully equipped fitness center, an
exercise program for clients with arthritis, a walking program and after
school youth programs to increase physical activity in our youth.
